An open letter to the (newly) free citizens of Mars

by chusemann posted: 6/25/2009 3:28:00 PM

    My fellow Martians,
Bra, what up?  I just wanted to write you a letter to apologize for busting up the place while trying to stop the EDF.  Those dudes are totally fierce and it took a lot of stuff to stop them.

So I'm totally sorry for knocking your houses Bra, I didn't think that APC would travel so far when it I blew up the set charges underneath it.  I'm also sorry for blowing up that gas station with the RPG, I just missed that EDF dude by "that" much and didn't see it behind the dude.  I also feel really bad for crushing that dude with the billboard.  When I shot it with the nano-dissolver-rifle thing I thought it was going to fall the other way.

I guess I'm also sorry for wrecking those office buildings while I was driving the mech.  I totally didn't realize I could walk through the building like it was paper and got a bit carried away with myself.  You have to admit it was pretty sweet when I launched that EDF dude through the roof though.  Did you see the hang time on the guy?

So in short I apologize for blowing all that stuff up dude.  I just got a little carried away with myself and had a little too much fun destroying anything and everything.

    Your liberator,
    Alec Mason

    Thoughts on Duke Nukem Democracy

by chusemann posted: 12/12/2008 12:09:00 AM

Guns and Roses is one of my favorite bands of all time.  For me, no band has burned brighter and flamed out as spectacularly as the band headed by Axle Rose.  The album was always there to get me amped for football games in high school and the discs were almost with me when I was in college.  I remember waiting in line at the college music store at midnight to pickup Use Your Illusion I and II during my freshman year in college.  I remember being struck by the diversity of the music on the albums and how well put together the music was.

Unfortunately that was the high point for the group as they one more album before going their separate ways while Axel worked on Chinese Democracy.  This was in 1993 and the album was finally released last month, nearly 15 years later.  Personally I had low expectations for the album as most things that go on that long are abject failures as the industry passes the artist away.  I was hoping for a semi-decent album that might trigger some resonances of earlier years but nothing more.  After buying the album and ripping it to my Zune I fired up the CD and you know what.  It kicked ass.

Let me rephrase that...it kicked f**king ass.

The music was clearly Guns and Roses sound but modern and almost timeless like the rest of their music (Sweet Child of Mine could be released next week and still hit the top of the charts) Sure the album isn't perfect but it's damn good and it manages to maintain the classic sound and feel without feeling dated.  The release of the album got me me thinking about Duke Nukem Forever as the two are linked in my mind.

I've been pretty harsh on the game over the last year or so but Chinese Democracy is giving me pause and a little hope.  Maybe 3D Realms will be able to deliver the mind blowing game they've been promising since 1997.  Maybe they'll be able to give us a relevant hero, solid multiplayer, and maybe even deliver on the unbelievably high expecations that people have set for the game.  That's a lot of maybe but it's enough to help move my cynicism meter a few notches back.

Another question is how will reviewers react to the game when it's released.  Chuck Klosterman sums up my feelings a bit in his review of Chinese Democracy by stating:

"Reviewing Chinese Democracy is not like reviewing music. It's more like reviewing a unicorn. Should I primarily be blown away that it exists at all? Am I supposed to compare it to conventional horses? To a rhinoceros? Does its pre-existing mythology impact its actual value, or must it be examined inside a cultural vacuum, as if this creature is no more (or less) special than the remainder of the animal kingdom?"

I'm not sure there's even an objective way for anyone to really review and rate the game given the full on history of the game.  Anything short of a B+ rating would be considered a critical failure.  Given the games decade long development you have to wonder how many copies the game would have to sell to be considered a commercial success.  I'm not sure if this really matters to the folks at 3D Realms but you would have to think they (and their backers) would like to get some kind of return on investment from the game.  Honestly, I think even seeing the game on store shelves would rank as major accomplishment at this point given the history behind the game.

Blather aside I'm hoping we see the game in 2009 just so we can all move on with our lives.  I'm nearly at the point where even talking about the game induces a vague pain in my lower back and I'd rather just get the thing over and done with no matter how good or bad the game is.  I do think now that there is a slim chance the folks at 3D Realms could deliver a good game now that Axel Rose has delivered an album that trumped expectations.  I just hope George Broussard doesn't use the same hairstylist.

Gaming and the perception of history

by chusemann posted: 11/13/2008 1:16:00 PM

As someone who is half German it was interesting to read this post on Joystiq by James Ransom-Wiley about how he couldn't get past the first five minutes of Call of Duty:World at War because of how the Japanese are depicted in the game.  That's certainly fine as we all have different tolerances for violence and the issue certainly seemed to hit home with him given his ancestry.  What really got my goat was that the fact that he then paints the Nazi's (and transitively all Germans) with the brush of pure evil but the Japanese (who committed nearly as horrible acts) get a free pass.

While no one in my family has direct ties to either World War (my great grandfather came to America before the start of WWI) I still feel some ties to my ancestry.  My family lived in Germany for a number of years and I've stood in the showers at Dachau and seen the horrors of a concentration first hand.  I've seen the monuments in Russia where the Nazi's wiped out entire villages and it's something that leaves an indelible mark on your soul.  It's something that we can't ever forget or allow to happen again.  For most Germans this is our cross to bear as there's not getting around it.

Personally I don't have a problem killing Nazi's in games like Call of Duty because I've abstracted them enough to realize it's just a game and that these are soldiers of an evil philosophy.  Not all Germans at the time were bad people and some fought actively against the Nazi party when and where they could (something that gets lost in all the WWII move and game plotlines).  If we really look at the mirror of history though it's not like we as American's were completely innocent (the fire bombing of Dresden comes to mind) of everything at the time.

Getting back to the point of this post it's a bit disturbing when you can paint one group as "evil" while another group is forgiven.  Especially based on comments like:

"I draw a disconnect between Nazis and Germans as large as the divide between "alien" and human. The Nazis have been transformed into monsters, which does not need to be justified in my gaming. But the Japanese Empire that bombed Pearl Harbor and the Japanese today, even Japanese-Americans, are very much intertwined in my perception. Those people are connected for me -- a part of me -- and I see them in World at War."

You have to wonder how much popular culture impacts a perception like this, if Saving Private Ryan was based in Iwo Jima would we still have the same perception of the Japanese?  They were just as ruthless as the Germans and Western culture is fairly ignorant of what the Japanese did to the Chinese during this period in time.  I'm not advocating that the Japanese were worse than the Germans at the time but we need to realize that there's a lot of history out there that hasn't made it's way into pop culture and that it's sometimes too easy to look the other way when it comes to personal history or things we are connected to.

    Rick Nash promotional video

by chusemann posted: 7/30/2008 1:03:00 AM

Tucked away in the 2K Sports E3 media kit was this video showing off Rick Nash in a short skit.  It's a bit ESPN'ish but still fairly funny.

E3 Article in the Columbus Dispatch

by chusemann posted: 7/22/2008 10:38:00 AM

The Columbus Dispatch has printed my E3 summary article and you can find the online version here.  It's not perfect (probably could have talked about online video distribution but that trend started last year) but I think it turned out well.

Dear Harmonix, I need Operation Mindcrime for Rock Band

by chusemann posted: 6/12/2008 12:43:00 PM

While flipping through albums on my Zune this week I re-discovered Queensryche's Operation Mindcrime.  The album just celebrated it's 20th anniversary and is considered to be one of the best metal albums of all time.

What makes the album different is that the album tells a story and has been likened to a soundtrack without a movie.  Every few years I fire the album up and enjoy the musical mastery on the album and the album really holds up over time.  I had a bit of an epiphany driving home yesterday and realized that this would make an absolutely kick ass Rock Band download.  Between some blistering guitar solos ("Speak' and "I don't believe in Love") and drum sounds there's a ton of potential.  You could even do all the semi-cheesy voice over work as well.  I know that this will never happen but the world would be a much better place if it did.

More on the HD DVD/Blu Ray thing - Cyril was right

by chusemann posted: 12/31/2007 11:33:00 AM

OK it looks like Cyril can take a victory lap around his apartment as this article backs up his arguments in my PS3/Blu Ray post.  Maybe we are looking at Laserdisc 2.0...
